The Akron Zips (15-3, 5-0) won their eighth straight game (26th consecutive win at Rhodes Arena) on Jan. 17 and remain unbeaten in MAC play after an 83-68 win over the Ohio Bobcats.
Ohio (13-5, 3-2) was without reigning MAC Player of the Year Antonio Campbell and it showed, as the Bobcats were lacking on the offensive end.
Akron received 17 points and 13 rebounds from Kwan Cheatham Jr., along with 15 points apiece from Isaiah Johnson and Jimond Ivey.
Antino Jackson added 11 for the Zips, who led, 38-35 at halftime, and pulled away in the second half.
Jaaron Simmons played all 40 minutes and scored a game-high 19 points, passing for five assists in the losing effort.
Akron is now two games ahead of Ohio for first place in the MAC East and has the best record in the conference, while Eastern Michigan (12-6, 4-1) and Northern Illinois (12-6, 4-1) are tied for first in the West.
Coincidentally, Akron’s next game comes against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 20 at Rhodes Arena, while Ohio travels to Northern Illinois on Jan. 21.
