Week 2 Preview: Avon at Olmsted Falls

The Avon Eagles, fresh off of a come from behind 20-16 win over the Mustangs of Merritt Island (FL), return to familiar surroundings this Friday night as they battle the Olmsted Falls Bulldogs at Olmsted Falls in a battle of SWC powerhouses.

Led by QB Ryan Maloy, the Eagles hope to use the momentum they gained defeating one of Florida’s perennial top tier programs in Merritt Island as a springboard to the top of the SWC.

Down late in the 4th quarter, not once but twice, Avon showed their resiliency and poise by continuing to battle through adversity, the home crowd and the heat and with their backs against the wall came up with a well earned victory.

RB Nick Perusek, whose 62 yard run gave Avon their first lead 13-9 with 2:40 to go, will be a key against the Bulldogs as Avon will try and keep Olmsted Falls’ offense on the sidelines. Another valiant effort will be needed for Avon’s experienced, fast defense as the Bulldogs will look to pound the ball inside.

The Olmsted Falls Bulldogs come into this contest after a come back win of their own, defeating the Bees of Brecksville-Broadview Heights, 28-18 in week one, on the road.

Led by RB Jack Spellacy and RB Luke Lombardo the Bulldogs erased an 18-6 late third quarter deficit and wore down the Bees defense. What was evident was the stout play of the Bulldog defense who will have to duplicate the effort versus a very fast, very precise Avon offense.

This will be a matchup of two playoff teams from 2016 and the winner will be the team to watch in the SWC this season. Avon cannot overlook Olmsted Falls as the Avon Lake Shoremen await in week 3.
