Well folks, it’s finally here, the final NEOSI Player of the Week poll of the football season. Before state semifinal action kicks off Friday night, let’s take a look back at some of the most impressive performances from last weekend. After sifting through the stats, we’ve found four candidates for this week’s award. Now, it’s in your hands. Who deserves to be named NEOSI Player of the Week? Lamar Sperling, Hoban
As the stage gets bigger, so do the performances from the Knights star RB. In their 41-7 victory over Hudson, Sperling had his way with the Explorers defense. The senior finished with 288 yards and five touchdowns on 38 carries to lead the way. Up next for Hoban (13-1) is a monumental matchup with the Massillon Tigers (12-1) at InfoCision Stadium in Akron. Winner advances to the Division II Championship game.
D’Shawntae Jones, Glenville
Preseason favorites to win Division IV, the Tarblooders continued their state championship campaign with a 42-33 win over Van Wert, their first regional title since 2013. Leading the way was junior RB D’Shawntate Jones. Jones ran for 287 yards and five touchdowns to lead Glenville to the state semifinals. This Saturday, the Tarblooders (13-0) take on Jefferson Area (11-3) at Alumni Stadium in Perry.
Wiltrell Hartson, Massillon Washington
The Tigers are looking for their first state championship since 1970 and Wiltrell Hartson is leading the way. In their 24-6 win over Stark County foe Uniontown Lake, Hartson put up a career performance. The senior RB carried the ball 41 times for 179 yards and a touchdown. Hartson tied Travis McGuire, his RB coach, for the single season total yards record with 1,976. The Tigers (12-1) continue their title hunt this Friday night at InfoCision Stadium in Akron when they square off with the Hoban Knights (13-1).
Casey Bullock, St. Edward
Looking to repeat as champions in Division I, the Eagles rolled over Mentor 27-0 in the Region 1 finals. Leading the way for St. Edward was junior QB Casey Bullock, who shined with both his arm and his legs. Bullock finished 12-16 for 174 yards and a touchdown and added 88 yards and another touchdown on 14 carries. Up next for the Eagles (13-1) is a showdown with Gahanna Lincoln (13-1) at Arlin Field in Mansfield.
