Trailing 3-1 going into the final inning, the resilient Walsh Jesuit Warriors scored six runs in the top of the 7th to defeat a very talented Gilmour Lancers team, 7-3 on Monday night.
“We had the top of the order up, 1-2-3, so we were obviously hopeful with that,” said starting senior shortstop and University of Cincinnati commit Joey Canzoni. “We were able to get on base and score a bunch of runs.”
Added Walsh Jesuit Head Baseball Coach, Joe Bowers, “Somehow we got lucky there in the last inning and strung some hits together and finally got that big hit to get our guys in. That was good to see. Coach Murphy has a great team over there at Gilmour and he always does a great job. They are tough to play against.”
Zach Halligan and Matthew Serdinak had clutch back to back doubles in the 7th inning to help spur the comeback. For the game, Serdinak, an Ohio Northern University commit, was 4-4. In fact, Serdinak was just a home run away from hitting for the cycle. He singled in the second and fourth innings, tripled in the sixth and doubled in the seventh.
“(I was) seeing the ball really well, caught a lot of barrels, and just hit a lot of line drives,” said Serdinak. When Serdinak was asked if he was in the zone, he smiled, and said, “I would say so.”
In addition to the excellent offensive performances, the Warriors pitching staff was again strong on the mound, as they have been all season.
Junior Sam Pece, senior Lukas Simone and sophomore Andrew Przybys combined to hold a powerful Gilmour offense to only three hits and two earned runs.
In summarizing the Warriors resiliency and focus, Coach Bowers attributed their excellence to staying calm, cool and collected.
“We are trying to do the same things all the time and not get too high or too low at any point.” said Bowers.
The Walsh Jesuit Warriors return to the diamond to take on the Medina Bees on Tuesday night.
