Left handed pitcher and Akron native Joe Mockbee was selected in the 29th round of the MLB Amateur Draft out of Michigan State University by the Chicago White Sox.
Mockbee is the second Northeast Ohio player to be selected by Chicago in this draft, as the White Sox also selected Mentor native and right handed pitcher Kade McClure out of Louisville in the sixth round.
Mockebee was a four-year letter winner under head coach Chris Kaczmar at Walsh Jesuit High School and was a two-time all league selection, along with being captain of the baseball team during his senior season.
Mockbee graduated from Walsh Jesuit in 2013 and pitched all four college seasons for the Spartans, going 13-7 over 93 appearances (84 of which came in relief) with a 3.24 career ERA. He struck out 178 batters in 172.1 innings pitched.
In 2017, the 6-foot-4 senior went 4-4 with a 5.15 ERA, making 29 appearances – leading the Big Ten in regular season appearances.
Congratulations to Joe, his family and the Walsh Jesuit baseball program on this memorable day!
