Fresh off of a sold out event that saw Carlos Baerga receive honor by the prestigious Wahoo Club, another Tribe legend will now receive his place among the greats to be honored. On June 23rd The Wahoo Club will present a breakfast/brunch with Dennis Martinez.
The event will take place at The Hilton Garden Inn across the street from Progressive Field. A place Martinez is more then familiar with from his time pitching for Cleveland 94-96. In fact, Martinez started the first ever game at Jacobs Field in 94 against the Seattle Mariners. A game the Indians won in thrilling extra inning fashion.
Martinez was a four time all star, and a key figure in the Cleveland Indians rotation 94-96. He is currently 60th on the all time strikeouts list and pitched more then 200 innings 9 times in his career. What makes his 245-193 record even more impressive is the fact that he racked up the 245 wins while never once winning 20 games in a season. A sign of year after year consistency.
He was the first Nicaraguan baseball player (pitcher or position player) to play in the majors and is considered one of the best Latin America pitchers of all time. On July 28, 1991, Martínez pitched the thirteenth perfect game in Major League Baseball history, pitching for the Montreal Expos against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was the first Latin American-born pitcher to pitch a perfect game. When he signed with the Indians in 94 as a free agent, it was the first major signal that the Indians were a serious contender in the American League.
Tribe fans, I can speak from personal experience that a brunch at The Wahoo Club is worth every penny! Mix in the chance to mingle with a legend, and it just keeps getting better! For full info on this event, and the Wahoo Club in general, check out the below flyer and we will see you there!
