Fresh off one of the best cards in MMA history, the UFC is right back at it just seven days later as they invade Norfolk.
Before we get to a stacked main card, there are 3 very catching fights on the undercard that have our full attention. Lets tackle those first.
Court McGee vs Sean Strickland
McGee had a lot of promise after winner TUF Season 11, but since has stumbled quite a bit going 6-4 since winning the show. His opponent Sean Strickland is 18-2 but with no wins of note.
Prediction – Strickland by decision
Sage Northcutt vs Michel Quinones
Super Sage looking to get back on track here after much hype to start his career really hasn’t panned out just yet. After all, he is corny.
Prediction – Northcutt by decision
John Dodson vs Marlon Moraes
John Dodson is one of the best bantamweights on the planet with wins over several big names, including current champion TJ Dillashaw.
Prediction – Dodson by knockout
On to the main card
Joe Lauzon vs Clay Guida
Two UFC fan favorites who ALWAYS bring the action. Neither will ever fight for a title, but both will always be in contention for the next big undercard main event. If that makes sense? Basically, both men have the name power to headline a free show, or an undercard, but the chance of them contending for titles ended years ago. Bottom line, they give the fans what they want, win or lose. They each have plenty of both.
Prediction – Lauzon by TKO
Raphael Assuncao vs Matthew Lopez
Assuncao is another guy with a win over current champ TJ Dillashaw on his resume. One may question his focus and coming into this one as he missed weight by nearly 4 pounds. With that being said, perhaps Lopez pulls the upset?
Prediction – Lopez by first round submission
Nate Marquardt vs Cezar Ferreira
Nate Marquardt is still around? Chalk him and his pasty white complexion up as one of the biggest busts in MMA history. 55 fights into his career he has beaten but also lost to a who’s who in the MMA world. At 11-6, Ferreira has no big wins on his resume, but could make a case for the Thiago Santos duke if we were feeling generous.
Prediction – Marquardt by knockout
Junior Albini vs Andrei Arlovski
The only question here is if Arlovski announces his retirement following his sixth straight loss?
Prediction – Albini by knockout
Matt Brown vs Diego Sanchez
Another fight between two very popular UFC legends. Maybe two of the best welterweights to never hold a title, lightweight in the case of Sanchez. Two dynamic personalities that fans love! Rumor has it this will be it for the career of Brown win or lose.
Prediction – Brown by split decision
AND NOW IT IS TIME FOR THE MAIN EVENT OF THE EVENING!!
Dustin Poirier vs Anthony Pettis
It has been a rough go at it for Pettis after losing 4 of his last 6. He needs to go on a run back in the Lightweight Division to once again get in title contention. Duke Rufus needs to help Pettis make the adjustments to once again be a dominant force.
Dustin Poirier will not be an easy man to get that run started against. Poirier has been a consistent winner in his MMA career but also one of those guys that can never seem to win the big one for a chance to fight for a bigger one. Always just a knee or elbow shy.
Prediction – Poirier by split decision
