3- He has nothing to lose.
This one is almost to easy to point out. His Light Heavyweight Championship is not on the line. No one expects him to win, and he has a giant chip on his shoulder because of it. Time and time again Cormier is seen as the underdog, and time and time again he comes away victorious.
He has only lost twice in his entire MMA career, with only one of them counting on the official record. Both times those defeats came to a chemically enhanced Jon Bones Jones. Bones is widely considered the greatest MMA competitor of all time.
Cormier is no stranger to fighting and defeating huge names in not only UFC history, but MMA history. To go with the ones he has defeated at heavyweight (mentioned earlier), he has also defeated a who’s who at Light Heavyweight. Those names included Anderson Spider Sliva, Anthony Rumble Johnson twice, Dan Henderson, Alexander Gustafsson and Volkan Oezdemir.
He has nothing to lose, a giant chip on his shoulder and a resume of impressive wins. Stipe is used to being in the underdog role as well, this is the first time in a longtime he will be seen as the heavy favorite, will that throw him?
