UFC 209 was Saturday Night Live from at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada. The headliner featured the much-anticipated rematch between Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley vs Stephen Thompson. The match was a rematch of their majority draw back in November at UFC 205.
It was an action-packed night from Las Vegas for UFC 209. Some strange decisions, but overall a good night of fights. Let’s get right to it.
Mark Hunt vs Alistair Overeem
Breakdown – Overeem broke Hunt down with some well-placed Knee’s and kicks all fight. Hunt did have some flashes of possibly putting Overeem away however with some perfectly timed elbows. In the end, Overeem’s knee’s to the skull were too much for Hunt to handle.
Result – Overeem by 3 round KO
Amanda Cooper vs Cynthia Calvillo
Breakdown – Calvillo looked excellent in her fourth career fight. She will continue to get better.
Result – Calvillo by first round submission (with ease)
Rashad Evans vs Dan Kelly
Breakdown – Interesting fight that could have went either way. Don’t let that leg brace and gray hair fool you, Kelly is tough. Evans lacked that explosion that he used to have, it really showed tonight.
Result – Kelly wins by split decision.
Lando Vannata vs David Teymur
Breakdown – Great fight, easily the fight of the night and breakout performances from both men. David Teymur showed the world who he was tonight with a gritty explosion. I scored the first round 10-8 for Vannata and the next two 10-9 for Teymur, fully expecting a draw. The judges saw it different.
Result – 30-27 across the board in a shocker, for David Teymur.
Tyron Woodley vs Stephen Wonderboy Thompson (for the UFC Welterweight Championship)
Breakdown – This was a horrendous main event that severely lacked action for 4 plus rounds. It wasn’t until the last 45 seconds that something finally happened. Woodley exploded and came within an eye lash of putting Thompson away. The fan’s booed heavily and should have. I had Thompson winning rounds 1,2 & 4 10-9, and 10-9 in the second for Woodley with a 10-8 fifth for Woodley. I fully expected a majority draw as I scored it 47-47. One judge agreed, the other two gave it to Woodley 48-47. Their first fight was an instant classic, this one, not so much!
Result – Tyron Woodley by Majority decision.
