Jalen Washington, a native of Twinsburg, Ohio and two-time captain for the Ohio State Buckeyes was selected in the 29th round of the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft by the San Diego Padres.
The right handed hitting shortstop/catcher appeared in games in all four seasons at Ohio State and became an everyday starter as a junior.
Washington was drafted as a catcher, but spent more playing time at shortstop in his college career.
In his junior season, Washington started 62 games, earning Big Ten All-Tournament Team honors in 2016.
In 2017, Washington started 56 games (54 at shortstop and two at catcher), leading the team in doubles (13), triples (4) and RBI (33).
Over four years at Ohio State, Washington owned a .254 career batting average, a .347 on base percentage, hit 10 home runs with 82 RBI and scored 76 runs.
Washington was a multi-sport athlete at Twinsburg High School, a three-year letter winner at Twinsburg in baseball, earning two All-Northeastern Ohio District selections and honorable mention All-Ohio. He lettered three years in basketball and three years in football, was named second team All-Ohio as a junior on the gridiron and a three-time all-conference selection in basketball.
