Tomlin Torched as Indians Lose Two of Three to Sox Following a 10-4 Loss: Three Takeaways From the Defeat

3. You Know It Can’t Be Going Good When Michael Martinez is Pitching

With Josh Tomlin only lasting 1.2 innings, you knew it was going to be a LONG night for the pen, and by the ninth inning manger Terry Francona decided to go with a position player to hopefully get three outs and get the night over with.

Enter Michael Martinez.

Yes, the utility player who made the last out in the World Series took the mound in what was a rather funny scene at Progressive Field, but give him credit he threw a scoreless rather fast inning that brought the few fans that were left in the stands to their feet.

Martinez is the first position player to pitch in a game for the Indians since Chris Gimenez did it on August 27th of last season.

Francona made a good point in the postgame, saying he’d rather have Martinez out there than wasting an inning for a guy like Bryan Shaw in a game that was basically already decided.
