The nightcap saw the Maroon & White bolt to a 3-0 lead over the first five minutes of play, and the Pirates never looked back. River potted five, while allowing one, in the opening frame.
The Pirates scored four unanswered goals in the second period. Rocky River bested Avon, three goals to one, in a running-clock, rolling-lines, youth-is-served, mercy-rule third.
Danny Asmar’s first goal (and ninth point) of the day closed out the 10-goal-lead mercy win. The sophomore forward had three assists in the first game and five in the second.
River’s dozen goals in the Avon win marked the team’s most in a single game since Dec. 2, 2016 (12 vs. Glenbrook South—Ill.). Eleven Pirate players tallied points in the 12-goal nightcap; eight scored goals.
Since 2000, Rocky River is now 15-6 vs. Avon Lake and 6-0 vs. Avon. The Pirates have defeated the Shoremen in eight straight.
