ROCKY RIVER – Game three of day two of the Tim Alexander Memorial tournament featured Mentor taking on Avon in a battle of the birds. The Cardinals would skate away with an 8-0 victory. The Cardinals jumped on the Eagles seconds into the game, and never looked back with big nights from Kyle Backston and Evan McBride.
The Cardinals earned a power play less then 3 minutes into the game, and took full advantage of it. It was Kyle Backston taking a Jack Perish pass to find the back of the net. From there, they had little issue scoring two more times in the period with goals from Jack O’Donnell and Evan McBride. They dominated the time of possession as well, and cruised to a 3-0 lead after one period of play.
The Mentor Cardinals continued to pour it on in the second period as after a slow start to the frame, the broke through for their fourth goal about midway through. This time it was Tyler Velionskis doing it unassisted. A few moments later they expanded the lead to 5-0 when Backston scored his second goal of the game, this time off a pass from McBride.
It was more of the same in the third period as the Cardinals tacked on two more goals to secure the 8-0 shutout victory. The win improves their tournament record to 1-1 while the Eagles drop to 0-1-1. Mentor next plays tonight at 7:15 against Solon and then tomorrow at 6:00 pm against Olmsted Falls.
