Eastlake – One of the exciting parts of having minor league baseball in Northeast Ohio is that we often get to watch top MLB prospects from around the league.
Certainly, as Northeast Ohio sports fans, we root for our Guardians organization players and teams. However, on the days when our favorite team is not performing as well as we would like, there are always other things of interest going on at the Ballpark.
That was the case on Thursday afternoon as the Captains lost 11-0.
On display for the Western Michigan Whitecaps was the Detroit Tigers 12th pick of the first round in the 2022 MLB Draft, Jace Jung.
Jace Jung, who played collegiate baseball at Texas Tech and is the brother of Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Jung, is currently the top ranked prospect in the Detroit Tigers organization.
Jung did not disappoint fans as he hit his 10th home run of the season in the 5th inning.
In addition to Jung, the Whitecaps were led offensively by Brady Allen (2-3, 3 RBI) who was a 5th round pick in the 2021 MLB draft and played collegiately at the University of South Carolina.
Also, Roberto Campos (2-4, 3 RBI), and Izaac Pacheco (2-4, 2 RBI) a 2nd round pick of the Tigers in the 2021 MLB Draft, also had good games at the plate for the Whitecaps.
On the mound for the Whitecaps, Troy Melton threw five innings of scoreless baseball. Melton, a former San Diego State University Aztecs baseball player, has pitched well this year compiling a 2.61 ERA, and striking out 48 batters in 41 innings of work.
For the game, the Captains had three hits and were led offensively by Milan Tolentino (1-3), son of former MLB player, Jose Tolentino, Jorge Burgos (1-3), and Christian Cairo (1‐3), son of former MLB Player, Miguel Cairo.
The Captains continue their homestand with the Whitecaps this weekend with a single game on Friday night, a doubleheader on Saturday, and a single game on Sunday afternoon.
