Three Reasons Why the Browns Should Hire Gregg Williams as Head Coach

The Browns won their second straight game by two scores this weekend after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals.  That first sentence should be enough to keep Williams as the head coach for the coming years.  If that doesn’t convince you then there are plenty of other reasons to keep Williams as the Browns’ Coach.

1. The Myth that Baker Mayfield needs an Offensive Head Coach

A popular argument for not retaining Gregg Williams is that the Browns need an offensive-minded head coach to help develop Baker Mayfield.  Since firing Hue Jackson, an offensive-minded head coach, and Todd Haley, Baker Mayfield has been beyond impressive.  In those three games, Baker Mayfield has nine touchdowns to just one interception.  He has completed 74% of his passes.  Only Drew Brees has a higher passer rating in that span.  Freddie Kitchens is absolutely contributing to the success of Baker Mayfield and should be calling plays next season for the Browns.

2. The team is more disciplined

Under Hue Jackson, the Browns averaged 8.125 penalties per game.  In three Hue Jackson’s eight games this season the Browns committed 10 or more penalties.  All three of those games were overtime games.  Under Gregg Williams, the Browns average 6 penalties per game.  In the eight games coached by Jackson, the Browns averaged 63.875 penalty yards per game compared to 39.67 penalty yards per game under Williams.  Some will say that the coach doesn’t commit the penalty but it’s obvious that something is different under Williams.

3. Why fix what isn’t broken?

Is it worth bringing in a man who has just two years of head coaching experience in college?  Lincoln Riley has been successful in his two seasons coaching at the University of Oklahoma but it’s easy to question if he has enough experience to lead an NFL team.  If anyone not named Gregg Williams is named head coach then it’s safe to say that person will hire their own coordinators.  The Browns defense has plenty of stud players on it but why change Gregg Williams defense when it is working so well?  Having one deep safety has worked great when that person is Demarious Randall.  The offense has been phenomenal under Freddie Kitchens.  Why go for a question mark when you know what you are getting?  The Browns should remove the interim tag and offer Gregg Williams the head coaching job.
