A LOOK AT WHAT’S HAPPENING
MEN’S BASKETBALL
- The Vikings will open the 2017-18 season with a 7:00 pm contest at Akron on Saturday (Nov. 11) as part of the NE Ohio Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. It will be the regular season debut of Dennis Felton as head coach of the Vikings.
- CSU defeated Cedarville, 78-60, on Thursday night in the lone exhibition game of the preseason.
- Kenny Carpenter led the Vikings with 16 points, adding three rebounds, while Tyree Appleby scored 15 points off the bench, hitting 3-of-4 from three-point. He added four rebounds and five assists.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
- Cleveland State will officially open the 2017-18 season this weekend, hosting Ball State at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 11.
- The Vikings will be under the direction of 15-year head coach Kate Peterson Abiad, and return nine letterwinners including four starters.
- Last week, the Vikings picked up a 65-55 victory in an exhibition against Muskingum, led by Ashanti Abshaw (17 pts, 6 rbs) and Khayla Livingston (11 pts, 6 asts).
CROSS COUNTRY
- The Vikings will close out the 2017 season this week, traveling to Terre Haute, Indiana for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday, November 10.
- Cleveland State is coming off one of their best finishes in program history at the Horizon League Championship, as they finished fourth as a team with a pair of All-League runners in Karen Barrientos and Anna Brandt.
FENCING
- Cleveland State competed at the Ohio State’s Elite Invitational Duals over the weekend. Facing multiple Big Ten and Ivy League opponents, the CSU men went 0-5 while the women were 0-6.
- Freshman Declan Forth led the CSU men with seven wins on the weekend while senior Sarah Mok held her own with a 10-8 record against six opponents.
MEN’S SOCCER
- Cleveland State (6-9-2, 4-3-2 HL), the fifth seed, travels to fourth-seeded Wright State for a Horizon League first round match Monday, Nov. 6, at 7:00 pm.
- The Vikings lost their lone match last week, as a 1-0 lead evaporated when Detroit Mercy made two penalty kicks in the final 10 minutes. Jordan Ianiro scored his first career goal in the setback.
MEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
- Cleveland State has the upcoming week off before hosting the sixth annual Magnus Cup the following weekend.
- CSU posted a come-from-behind 178.5-174.5 dual win over Green Bay, as the Vikings clinched on the final event.
- Freshman Lee Moffett won the 500 and 1650 freestyle at the meet while classmate Matt Akers swept the diving events.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING
- Cleveland State has the upcoming week off before hosting the sixth annual Magnus Cup the following weekend.
- The Vikings picked up wins over Green Bay (188-165) and Marshall (184-166) while hosting a double dual.
- Junior Molly McNamara swept the butterfly events and swam on two winning relays while the CSU women also took the top five spots in the 100 breaststroke.
MEN’S TENNIS
- Cleveland State closed out the fall season with the Viking Invitational last weekend, with Nico Mostardi capturing the singles title and Mostardi and Matthew Terry winning the main doubles draw.
- Terry and Mostardi both finished the fall slate with a team-best 12 singles wins, while Luke Phillips notched 10 wins during the fall season.
- The Vikings will open their spring season at Ohio State on January 20.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
- The Vikings wrapped up their fall slate last weekend, participating in the WMU Super Challenge.
- Aleksandra Golawska and Isabella Spindler both finished the fall season with six singles wins, while Golawska is also just one win shy of earning spot in the top-10 on the CSU Singles Wins List.
VOLLEYBALL
- Cleveland State (18-7, 11-3) will close out the regular season with a pair of matches this week, traveling to Northern Kentucky on Wednesday (November 8) and hosting Green Bay on Friday (November 10).
- The Vikings enter the final week of the regular season on an eight-match winstreak and in first place in the Horizon League standings.
- Friday’s match against Green Bay will be Senior Night, as the Vikings will honor the quartet of Gina Kilner, Shannon Grega, Katie Mihalik, and Alexis Middlebrooks prior to first serve.
WRESTLING
- Cleveland State continues its season this Saturday, Nov. 11, at the EMU Open.
- Redshirt senior Nick Corba went 5-1 at the Clarion Open over the weekend to place third at 184 pounds.
- Junior John Vaughn won four matches, including upsetting a seeded Big Ten opponent.
VIKING OF THE WEEK
Nico Mostardi | So. | Men’s Tennis
Defended his Viking Invitational Singles Title after going 5-0 on the weekend. Was also part of the Viking Invitational Championship doubles team with Matthew Terry. Finished the fall season with a team-best 12 singles wins.
