On paper, tonight’s matchup between Cub Swanson and Brian Ortega appears to be a lopsided blowout. Swanson lands more strikes per minute than Ortega (4.11 to 3.63), is far more accurate (50 percent to 33 percent) and absorbs far less strikes (3.24 per minute to 4.94)
In his last match against Artem Lobov, he landed 114 times to the head, 48 times to the legs, and 47 times to the body. While most strikers get caught up in headhunting looking for that quick KO, Swanson shows the discipline to take what the defense gives him.
Ortega is known to switch stances mid fight, and is highly unorthodox. It hasn’t stopped him from winning in the UFC however, Ortega is 4-0 with 1 no-contest in the octagon. Ortega’s striking defense has been problematic at times. He’s been out-landed in all five of his UFC bouts.
Swanson must stay focused tonight and cannot look past Ortega to a bout with Max Holloway for the championship. Or else Ortega may stun him.
