It’s here, Super Bowl LVII. This is the first time in a while that I genuinely don’t know or have an idea who is going to win the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles are set to do battle Sunday in Phoenix Arizona, and I don’t have a clue which way I am leaning. There is so much to root for in this game, and I won’t have a grasp until the actual game starts. But there are some fun things to look forward to.
Super Bowl LVII Makes History
This is the first time in the history of the Super Bowl that both teams will start a black Quarterback. Both teams have players from Cleveland as the Chiefs have Travis Kelce and Frank Clark, the Eagles have Jason Kelce and even their head coach was a player at Mount Union. (I know it’s not Cleveland but its Ohio and I have several friends who went there so it’s close to my heart) the game features one of my personal favorite coaches in Andy Reid. This game is just a bunch of guys I feel like I know playing in the biggest game of the year. And I still am not leaning one way or the other.
Who’s better on paper
If we are strictly talking about the two teams from a football standpoint, top to bottom, the Eagles are the better team. They are loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. The defense was dominant at times in the regular season, and the offense didn’t let up either. The Eagles have two top tier receivers in AJ Brown, and DeVonta Smith. Miles Sanders is a threat out the backfield and they are all under the guidance of MVP runner up Jalen Hurts at QB.
Jalen Hurts
Hurts is a pure winner and I absolutely love his story. I remember hating him at Alabama, the watching him get benched in the National Championship game and still rooting for his team. Then he goes to Oklahoma, and puts up crazy numbers, and gets drafted by the Eagles and I immediately liked the guy. He is a proven winner and everywhere he goes, no matter the questions, he wins. So, it would not surprise me if going into this game, Hurts with the better team comes out on top. BUT… he’s going against what I, and many others feel is on track to become one of the greatest players of all time in Patrick Mahomes.
Patrick Mahomes
The Chiefs are led by Mahomes and it all goes through him. After losing a major weapon this offseason in Tyreek Hill, plenty of people thought this would be a down year for Mahomes. And it would have been understood if that happened. But, it didn’t. Mahomes ended up winning his second MVP award (beating out Hurts) as he leads the Chiefs to their third Super Bowl. So far, he is 1-1 but you just never count him out. In a time where we are looking for the next face of the league, Mahomes has solidly placed himself as the class of the position as he just keeps winning. In five years, he’s been to five conference championship games, and now three Super Bowls. Now it isn’t like the cupboards are bare.
Kansas City may have what may end up being the best TE of all time in Travis Kelce. The Cleveland Hts graduate is just fun to watch, and the best in the game. They have a two headed running back tandem in rookie Isiah Pacheco, and Jerick McKinnon. And the wideouts are experienced and can be explosive with Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster. The Chiefs are loaded because they have talent, and its led by Mahomes.
Hoping for a fun game to watch
I just don’t know. Even still I thought I may be able to figure out who I would be rooting for while writing this. I have not decided. As for me to not root for them. No-one has given “bulletin board “material. Both teams have players I like and neither team has a player I just dislike. I guess all I want is a good game. I want the game to go into the fourth quarter, with the game tied. Let’s see some scoring in the final two minutes that has everyone up until midnight talking about it. I guess that is what I am rooting for. Because if you asked me to pick a team, I like them both. Here’s hoping Super Bowl LVII is memorable.
