Strongsville put the defensive clamps on Berea-Midpark’s second half comeback attempt and knocked off the Lady Titans by a 48-45 count on Tuesday night in a district semifinal at Valley Forge High School. The Lady Mustangs will meet Olmsted Falls, who dumped Brunswick 66-36 earlier in the evening, in the district final on Friday night.
Strongsville had early leads of 13-2 and 23-12 before Berea-Midpark could get their offense in gear. Titans’ junior guard Kendall Braaten scored nine second quarter points to reduce the Mustangs’ advantage to 23-18 at halftime. Junior forward Taylor Bass had 10 first-half points to pace the Strongsville offense.
Berea-Midpark finally caught the Mustangs at 27-27 on two free throws by junior guard Lauren Yee with 4:33 to play in the third quarter. And with about one minute left in the quarter, Braaten nailed a 3-pointer to give the Titans their first lead at 32-31.
But Strongsville got back on course, led by senior guard Ava Kadras. She scored all 11 of her points in the second half and her 3-pointer late in the contest gave the Mustangs their final margin.
