St. Ignatius Defeats Avon 9-1, Locking Up Their Spot In The Semifinals

BROOKLYN, Ohio- The St. Ignatius Wildcats and Avon Eagles took the ice at the John M. Coyne for their quarterfinal matchup in the Brooklyn District. The Eagles were coming off of wins against Chagrin Falls and Brooklyn, where the Wildcats got to this point with a 10-0 win over Brecksville-Broadview Heights.

Cutting the Eagles off and making the game one-dimensional got St. Ignatius on the board first, as Connor Koehnke was set up for the marker by Connor McGowan and Seth Whitney, as Koehnke fired a shot that found itself lodged inside the back of the net. Ignatius would tally two more in the frame, as Bain Kurtz would make it 2-0 at the 10:12 mark and Michael Boehm would respond less than a minute later with a goal at the 10:44 mark of the frame. The Wildcats would head into the locker room leading Avon 3-0, though the deficit could’ve been a lot larger if not for Danny Fielding’s 25 saves in the frame.

The second frame would start with Avon on the power play for another 1:29 due to a high-sticking penalty on St. Ignatius during the closing minutes of the opening period. St. Ignatius would kill off the penalty and strike for the fourth time on the evening, as Cullen Frebes would find an opening in the top shelf and send the puck flying past Danny Fielding. The Wildcats would tally one more up off of the stick of Michael Boehm to make it 5-0 going into the final stanza.

St. Ignatius would continue to send pucks flying towards Fielding at an efficient rate, as Bain Kurtz would strike at the 1:23 mark of the frame with Benji Rechin and Seth Whitney being credited with the assists. Bill Baumann would increase the lead to seven, as Michael Boehm would take it from there to finish the day with four goals. Avon’s Zach Zwierecki would finish out an historic season the only way it should be finished, as he scored a goal at the 14:54 mark of the frame to make the final score 9-1 in favor of St. Ignatius.

St. Ignatius awaits the winner of Holy Name/Midview in the semifinals on Saturday at 1:00pm.
