St. Edwards proved why they’re the favorite in Division I with a 42-10 thumping of Pittsburgh Central Catholic Friday night at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The Eagles dominant rushing attack topped 200 yards for the second consecutive game.

The Eagles would strike first on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Casey Bullock to Kyan Mason, a duo which would cause headaches for the Vikings throughout the game. Central Catholic would inch closer on a 40-yard Rowan Kautter field goal, giving St. Eds a 7-3 lead after one.

Marvin Bell would strike for the first of his two touchdowns on a 12-yard run less than a minute into the second quarter. Amari Shields plowed in from three yards out to make it 14-10, but that’s as close as it would get.

Central Catholic tried to get fancy and ran a reverse-pass, but Vernon Settles was picked off by Bradley Eaton, setting the Eagles up near midfield. The very next play, Bullock called his own number, and the quarterback ran 53 yards for a touchdown, lowering his shoulder to bowl through tacklers. The Vikings put together an impressive drive before the half but missed a 32-yard field goal to make it 21-10 at the half.

Much like the first half, it was all Eagles in the second. Marvin Bell got his second touchdown of the night on a 16-yard run that capped off a 4 play, 67-yard drive. The Eagles weren’t done in the third quarter as Bullock and Mason hooked up for their second touchdown of the game, this time from 4 yards out.

Leading 35-10 heading into the fourth, Coach Tom Lombardo decided to go with backup Lucas Perusek and the senior did not disappoint. On his first drive of the game, Perusek racked up 74 yards on four carries and capped it off with a touchdown, the final score in the Eagles 42-10 victory.

While the Vikings were able to hang around early, the suffocating defense of St. Edwards shut them out the final three quarters. To be fair to Central Catholic, most teams the Eagles play will struggle offensively. The pass rushing duo of Wyatt Gedeon (Coastal Carolina) and Michael Kilbane (Northwestern) were in the backfield all night long. They will continue to be a headache week after week for opponents. Gedeon made his impact felt on special teams as well, blocking a punt in the 3rd quarter.

Senior Casey Bullock finished the night with 165 passing yards and two touchdowns to Kyan Mason to go along with 45 rushing yards. Marvin Bell also punched in two for the Eagles and finished the game with 55 rushing yards. Mason finished with 98 receiving yards to go along with his two touchdowns.

St. Edwards (2-0) continues their quest to repeat as state champions next week with a home matchup against Cherry Creek (CO). The Eagles host the Bruins next Saturday night at 8 pm at First Federal Lakewood Stadium.
