The St. Edward Eagles were stellar on Saturday afternoon in their season opener against Center Grove at Tom Benson Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
In a dominant performance, the Eagles defeated Center Grove, 27-10 in a game that was not really close.
To emphasize how great a performance this was for St. Edward, they defeated a Center Grove team that has won the state championship in Indiana for the last three years.
“It was a heck of a week of preparation to try to prepare for them,” said St. Edward Head Coach Tom Lombardo. “We’re just real happy that we were able to get that first win.”
The Eagles opened up a 14-3 lead in the first half with a dominant offensive line performance anchored by Ohio State University commits Devontae Armstrong (6-5, 305 pounds), Deontae Armstrong (6-7, 295 pounds) and University of Michigan commit Ben Roebuck (6-8, 320 pounds). In addition on the offensive line the Eagles also have Sawyer Prementine (6-3, 270 pounds), Archer Soltis (6-2, 305), and tight end Michael Balogh (6-4, 235).
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first when senior Joshua Groudle ran for a 21-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
St. Edward added to their lead when senior Jacob Robinson ran for a three yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Center Grove got on the scoreboard late in the first half when they connected on a field goal to make the score 14-3.

After halftime, St. Edward added to their lead when sophomore Brandon White scored on an 11-yard touchdown run as they took a 20-3 lead with 5:17 left in the third quarter.

The Eagles scored their final touchdown of the day when Josh Groudle got his second touchdown of the game on a 5-yard touchdown run with 9:37 left in the game.

Center Grove got a late fourth quarter touchdown run from Rylan Cook to make the final score 27-10.
St. Edward next takes on Our Lady of God Counsel on Sunday, August 27th on their home turf at First Federal Lakewood Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN.
