Black River Pirates vs Buckeye Bucks
Sports on Tap’s Week 7 game of the week had the boys traveling to Medina to watch the visiting Black River Pirates take on the Buckeye Bucks in a Patriot Athletic Conference Matchup. The physicality of both teams was sure to provide a hard hitting contest between two rival teams.
The action started off quick for the bucks when they scored on their second drive of the first quarter on a 57 yard touchdown drive, capped off by a 17 yard touchdown run by senior RB/QB Michael Doerge, Buckeye lead 7-0. Buckeye was able to tack on another touchdown thanks to an 80 yard Touchdown run by WR Justin Canedy and just like that the bucks were up 14-0 at the end of the 1st quarter
The second quarter began with a 78 yard drive by the pirates capped off by a 1 yard touchdown run by RB Jacob Campbell, cutting the Buckeye lead to 14-7. Black River’s forced a Buckeye punt and the offense was on the move threatening to tie the score late in the second quarter. Buckeye’s Defense was able to force a Pirate turnover, and the Bucks took a 14-7 lead halftime lead,
The story of the third quarter was defense and hard hitting, both defensive units were able to dominate the quarter. Buckeye’s defense was particularly impressive coming out the half having made some adjustments to thwart the Black River Defense that was gaining momentum before half. The Pirate defense was equally impressive in the quarter, making it difficult for every Buckeye Buck who ran the ball. The third quarter ended with Buckeye leading 14-7
Buckeye opened the fourth quarter starting on their own 13 yard line and was able to march down to the pirate 7 yard line, however the Pirate defense was able to hold the Bucks to a 24 yard field goal by Richard Gatt, Buckeye held a 17-7 lead with 8:13 left. Black River tried to score quickly on the corresponding drive, but the buckeye defense was able to force a turnover on downs. Not to be out done, the Pirates defense forced a turnover on downs themselves and had a shot to get within striking distance. However a late interception by senior defensive back Richard Van Boxel sealed game for the Bucks 17-7.
After the game Head Coach Mark Pinzone praised his team, specifically his defense, for a great effort holding a potent offense like Black River to only 7 points.
“ I am proud of the effort you put forth tonight, we out hit this team and were more physical than this team and that was the difference tonight” Coach Pinzone told his team after the game
Buckeye improves to 6-1 on the season and will travel to Firelands in week 8, while Black River falls to 4-3 and will travel to Brookside in week 8.
