Cleveland-Ohio, The Magnificat Girls Varsity soccer team started their rivalry match with a 1-0-2 record and a number seven ranking in Ohio. Their agenda was to prove they are the better team and get a statement win over their rival, St. Joseph Academy. The girls from St. Joseph had something to say about that.
The match was a defensive showcase in the first half. Both goalies led their defenses to stifle a combined 11 shots. Magnificat goalie Hannah Lee was in a constant duel with St. Joseph’s Kylie Schmitz for the best save. It was one of the rare times you could say that defense was entertaining in soccer.
The second half promised to be more of the same, yet Magnificat capitalized on a defensive mistake ten minutes in. The Jaguars missed on a defensive header out of their goal. The ball was called inside the goal area and Magnificat claimed their first score. Ten minutes later, the Blue Streaks scored on a thirty yard score from a corner kick. The game then reverted back to a defensive struggle.
Don’t miss the chance to catch these two teams as they are capable of scoring multiple goals per game. You might even get a defensive clinic by either goalie.
I was able to catch up with St. Joseph’s Coach Otto after the game. I asked him about what his team can take away from the game. “It was good to face a high caliber team in order to test ourselves. We can take this opportunity to build on the confidence of playing better defense each game.”
The two teams are projected to have strong seasons as they prepare for the postseason.
