Copley Indians vs Barberton Magics

Week 4 was the start of conference play in the Suburban League American Division, and the conference play got off to a fantastic start. Copley came in to the game trying to rebound from a heartbreaking loss to Uniontown Lake in week 3, Barberton was looking to defend home field and continue their winning ways. It was sure to be a hotly contested game between 2 teams looking to notch an early lead in the division.
The action started early when the Magics intercepted an Austin Brenner pass on the second play of the game. Barberton wasted no time in capitalizing with a 15 yd. TD pass from QB Zane Ries to WR Garrett Turnbaugh giving Barberton 7-0 lead. Copley’s offense again turned the ball over on a RB Weston Bridges fumble. The Fumble gave Barberton excellent field positon resulting in a 2 yd. TD run by Jr RB Keye Thompson, a missed extra point gave Barberton a 13-0 lead.
An interception by Copley’s defense late in first quarter was capped off by 3 yd. TD run by QB Austin Brenner , the score was 13-6. Copley’s defense forced a Barberton punt and the Indians started their drive on the Barberton 38 yd. line. It appeared that Copley was going to power the ball into the end zone, but a fumble on the Barberton six yard line by Weston Bridges stalled the drive. Barberton again found the end zone on an 84 yd. catch and run from senior TE Kobie Booker, Barberton was up 20-6 midway through the 2nd quarter. Copley responded with a 48 yd. drive, capped off by a 6 yd. TD run by Weston Bridges. The first half ended with Barberton holding a 20-13 lead.

Copley came out in the third quarter and scored on their first drive, with Weston Bridges adding his second touchdown of the night capped off with a 1 yd. TD run, evening the score at 20-20 early in the third quarter. Barberton responded with an 80 yd. Touchdown drive that was that included a long pass from QB Zane Ries to RB Jeff Parker, Parker later capped of the drive with a 1 yd. TD Run, another missed extra point made the score 26-20 midway through the 3rd. A fumbled snap on a punt by Copley gave the Magics the ball on the Copley 42 yard line and Barberton was looking to add to their 26-20 lead as the 3rd quarter came to an end.
The 4th quarter began with Barberton threatening from the Copley 5 yd. line. But the Copley defense answered the bell and stopped the Magics on a 4th and goal, turning the ball over on downs. Copley would then go three and out and punted to Barberton, the Magics followed suit and gave the ball back to the Indians. Copley’s next drive saw a long pass from QB Brenner to WR Davis Cameron setting Copley up on the Barberton 2 yd. line. Weston Bridges got his 3rd TD of the night and with the extra point the Indians held a 1 point lead with 2:13 left in the game. Barberton was took the ball on their own 20 yard line and drove the ball all the way down to the Copley 35 yard line, and the Copley fans probably felt a bit of déjà vu from last week’s game. However the Copley defense again was able to answer the bell, forcing and recovering a Barberton fumble with 34 seconds left in the game giving Copley the victory.

Copley Running Back Weston Bridges talked about one of the last key plays he played on the defensive side of the ball “They told me to stay on #6, he knew the ball was coming to him, so I put my hands up and hoped for the best”.

Copley Head Coach Scott Chouinard talked about the difference in the second half ” 2nd half we felt like we were controlling the line of scrimmage pretty well , with the offensive line, so we wanted to keep it on the ground and make them stop us”.

Barberton falls to 3-1 and 0-1 in the conference and will look to rebound when they travel to take on Aurora in week 5. Copley will look to continue their winning ways when they welcome Revere in week 5.
