The Columbus Blue Jackets have made a move regarding two of the more intriguing prospects they have, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Sonny Milano.
Late Friday night, the Blue Jackets assigned Oliver Bjorkstrand to the Cleveland Monsters and recalled Sonny Milano to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Bjorkstrand is a very familiar face with Clevelanders, as he was a crucial piece on the Calder Cup championship team. In fact, Bjorkstrand scored the game-winning goal in Game 4 to clinch the Calder Cup. He also won the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy for the Most Valuable Player during the Calder Cup Playoffs. Bjorkstrand looked to be a big part of this year’s Blue Jackets team, but that has not been the case. The 21-year-old has played in three games and has yet to record a goal or assist. He has two shots on goal and four minutes in the penalty box. These stats on the young season led to the assignment to Cleveland, where he will get a chance to see the hometown faithful next Thursday. It will be a cool sight to see, as Cleveland welcomes back the Calder Cup MVP.
This move did benefit one of the other Blue Jackets’ prospects, as Sonny Milano was called up to the Blue Jackets. Milano has been showing signs of developing as a two-way player, so it looks like this might be his chance to show what he’s got. Milano scored in the first game of the season, but his ability to pass the puck as well as he does is really fun to watch. Milano spent three games in Columbus last year before moving down to the Monsters to assist on the historic run the team had last year.
It will be interesting to see what the Blue Jackets look like with Sonny Milano lined up next to another first-round pick Zach Werenski, the 19-year-old rookie who is having a great start to the year.
