While fans and media questioned the team’s discipline and Pettine following a bad day with penalties against the Chargers, including the questionable offsides call against Tramon Williams on the game-winning field goal by rookie Josh Lambo, I have a feeling not many will make the same cries against John Harbaugh even though his team shot itself in the foot many more times.
The Browns were penalized nine times for 74 yards, with the big one being an unsportsmanlike late hit call against K’Waun Williams that extended what turned out to be the game-tying drive by the Ravens.
However, Baltimore was penalized 12 times for 98 yards, giving the Browns three first downs via penalty. One penalty overturned what would have been the only turnover of the game – a McCown interception early in the game – and a hands-to-the-face penalty extended the team’s first touchdown drive that really changed the momentum of the game.
Rookie Danny Shelton, who did have a tackle for a four-yard loss during the game, didn’t help himself by committing two unsportsmanlike fouls, although the first one was a ticky-tack call.
