4. Once again, the Browns’ kicking game came up huge
Rookie Travis Coons has finally made the name of Phil Dawson a distant memory, going 11-for-11 on field goals and 9-for-9 on extra points through his first five games. And, like Dawson, Coons can add kicking a game-winning field goal at Baltimore onto his resume, connecting from 32 yards out in overtime.
Coons, whose first NFL point was a league-record 48-yard extra point, has been light’s out since winning the job from Carey Spaar in training camp. Coons never missed a kick during the preseason and that has carried over to the regular season. Where Billy Cundiff was hounded with cries for Dawson whenever he came up short or wide (which was quite a bit last season), as long as Coons continues to put the ball right between the uprights, those cries are silenced.
For the first time all season, Andy Lee was outpunted by his opponent. His 37.3-yard average was his lowest of the season. However, he continues to be an asset for the Browns. If he’s not the AFC Pro Bowl punter, I’ll be shocked.
