Parma, Ohio– It was a humid September evening at Byers Field, as the Shaw Cardinals traveled to take on the winless Valley Forge Patriots. The Patriots had failed to score in their previous two games, where Shaw was trying to build off of their victory last week.
Shaw removed all doubts about the toughness of the team tonight and it all started with Junior Quarterback Alejandro Washington. Washington threw a fantastic 39-yard throw to Marvonte Ramsey for a touchdown to open the scoring. Washington looked poised in the pocket all night, and the confidence started to grow after that touchdown throw.
Washington struck again and again, finding Lamero Smith on a 91 yard touchdown pass and then converted a Davis interception off of John Quinones into a 34 yard touchdown pass to Javonte Gandy. Washington would lead the Cardinals into half with a 27-7 lead, as Valley Forge struggled all night to find a groove. Along with Washington having a great day, London Patton would help the rushing attack. Patton would finish the day with seventy yards on thirteen carries, but his efforts tonight helped open up the defense.
After the first half Alejandro Washington had, it would be hard to find a comeback for Valley Forge. Valley Forge Quarterback John Quinones couldn’t find his way tonight, only completing four of eighteen passes for fifty-eight yards. Add that up with the night the Shaw offense was having and it was a forgettable night for the Patriots. Penalties sure didn’t help the cause, as Valley Forge stalled a lot of their drives due to penalties and ended some late drives in the game with turnovers.
As Valley Forge tried to make it a game late with a rushing Touchdown, it was too little too late. Shaw scored a few more times and finished off the game with a 39-14 win over Valley Forge. Valley Forge drops to 0-5 and Shaw improves to 3-2.
After the game, Alejandro Washington spoke about his performance:
“People were wide open. They were just leaving holes inside of their defense and thanks to my offensive linemen, I had enough time to drop back and put the ball to my receivers and just let them do the rest.”
Player Of The Game: Shaw Quarterback Alejandro Washington, who finished with 354 Passing yards and five touchdowns, completing seven of fifteen passes.
