For the Shaker Heights Red Raiders, it was 25 years ago when a young man named Malcolm Sims popped in 55 points to set the school record for most points in a game.
It by no means wasn’t the goal of Christian Guess to put his name in the record book on Friday night in a game against Mentor, but the 6-6 senior did just that, breaking Sims’ mark with 57 points in a 108-95 win over the Cardinals.
For his efforts and record-breaking outing, Guess is our NEOSI Athlete Of The Week for Week Four of the Winter Sports season.
It wasn’t like Guess’ huge night came against a sub-par team, as the Raiders needed all the points they could get from their senior, as they trailed the Cardinals at one point by 11 before Guess took over.
After falling behind 12-2 and 19-9, Guess turned it on, helping the Raiders put in 90 points in the final three quarters.
“At the end of the first, I kinda knew I was going to have a big night,” Guess said about his performance. “My teammates did a great job finding me and getting me the ball.”
Guess before Friday night’s outburst never scored over 32 in a game, and he did that against Glenville, the school he transferred from to Shaker as a junior.
”This was the most fun game of my career,” Guess said after the win.
It was fun to watch, and one that Guess will relive for a long time to come as the Raiders look to continue to rise up the ranks in local Northeast Ohio Boys Basketball.
