Conclusion
Overall, this was not supposed to be an article to completely bash Deshaun Watson. He still has the talents to be a first round QB and will go down among the best college QBs of recent time. The success of the college game doesn’t always translate to the pros like Tim Tebow and Johnny Manziel who were drafted in a spot similar to where I can see Watson going. What Watson has is the intangibles of leadership, a winning attitude, and the culture to turn things around. Those are ideal things that can’t be taught.
If he can learn or show that he can do a proper dropback, read entire defenses correctly and work through progressions while delivering an accurate ball he can have NFL success. The Senior Bowl would have been a perfect opportunity to show that especially since there is not a consensus on who is number one, two, or three among Watson, Kizer, and Trubisky. After looking at tapes on him I think he is number three of that group with a high second round grade meaning he could easily go in the backend of round one because of the high priority for QBs especially with the drop off after the top three this year.
Don’t let the Championship game fool you into thinking he’s going to be the next star and look at all the other points mentioned. The NFL is based on traits and characteristics, not college performance. Other QBs are better passers, better built, and have a high IQ but Watson has enough to not rule him out, just don’t waste the time thinking of him as the Savior or a top five pick.
