Lyndhurst Oh. – The Kenston Bombers came to play against the Villa Angela-St. Joseph Vikings. With both teams coming in at 3-0, this was a test for the two squads, and the first half was highlight play after highlight play!

All Ohio player, and Akron commit Sean Patrick, took the opening kickoff 76 yards to the house to set the tone for the Bombers. The Vikings tried to kick it short to avoid kicking it to him, but the ball found Patrick anyway and he did the rest. But the Vikings came into this game also undefeated. Amani Powell took the ball 20 yards to the house and the Vikings were on the board. A missed PAT had the score looking funky, but not for long as Patrick pushed the lead for the Bombers for his first rushing TD of the half, a 1-yard run.

After a three and out for VASJ, Patrick went to the house again, this time from 10 yards out, as the Bombers pushed their lead to 21-6. But the Vikings kept fighting and star QB Kylan Steuball hooked up with “Bo” Jackson for a 67-yard screen pass that kept the Vikings close. But it was a first half for Patrick as he went 26 yards for another score for Kenston and put them up 28-13.

On the very next drive, Steuball hit receiver Brian Kortovich on a 63 yard catch and run for the Vikings. It was evident this game was going to be special for both teams and there was a buzz in the stadium. Everyone loved the up and down, the responses from both teams. And they weren’t done responding to each other. With the score 28-13 Kenston, QB Lucas Kaltenbach threw a 35-yard pass to Tymir Cardona to put the Bombers up 35-20. After Cardona picked off Steuball, the Vikings Savion Lewis picked off Kaltenbach and with 1:41 in the half, and the ball on the 35, the Vikings wanted to go into halftime after a score. And they did! After a 34-yard pass from Steuball to Kortovich, Bo Jackson ran up the middle for a 1-yard score to pull VASJ within one score and go into halftime down 35-27.

Yes, all that scoring was in the first half.  The second half was the complete opposite as both teams tightened up their defense. The Bombers got a 26-yard run in the third quarter from Kaltenbach, for the only score in the third, to give the Bombers a 42-27 lead. In the fourth quarter, there were more defense and field position battles, but Sean Patrick scored his 4th rushing, and 5th overall TD of the night to really seal the deal on a 1-yard run to make the final score 49-27.

The game was a lot of fun to watch. As a fan of football, you saw kids really care and two really good teams, and two well coached teams go at it and take and throw punches. While VASJ ended up on the losing end, you could tell these kids are really poised and this loss may be a lesson. What a game for Patrick who finished with 205 yards on the ground and 5 TDs.

Who knows. These teams could see each other down the line in the Playoffs. That would be a lot of fun!
