PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA— Northeast Ohio native Red Gerard won the first U.S. gold medal of the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Gerard hails from Rocky River, but currently resides in Silverthorne, Colorado. He still has family that lives in Rocky River.
The 17-year-old’s gold medal came in men’s snowboard slopestyle, and he reached top spot on the podium as an underdog.
He was sitting in third place after the first two runs but then got an 87.16 on his third and final run, securing him the gold.
Gerard had to sit through the final three competitors, but his score would ultimately stand as the best overall.
Gerard will also compete in the Big Air contest on Feb. 24, the day before the PyeongChang Games closing ceremony.

His last run victory was pure joy for him and the nation.
Hopefully he won’t be approached for a political op with the White House and become a political pawn for anyone.
Particularly during the Trump “administration” and its consistent goal of the destruction of American values we need to remind ourselves that adventurous hard working uncomplaining Americans can and do still excel.
