Within the first two minutes of action, Middleweight contender Robert Whittaker had suffered a knee injury that would seem to limit him for the rest of his Interim Middleweight title clash with Yoel Romero. Whittaker was hit with vicious side kicks in the first two rounds that were allowing Romero to close the gap and take him down. Bobby Knuckles, as he has been dubbed, would need to rally and win the last three rounds of his fight to claim UFC gold.
With a lot of grit and a lot of heart, Whittaker would turn the tide and take it to the former Olympic wrestler for fifteen minutes.
Whittaker would stuff every takedown that Romero would attempt and would shut down the leg kicks, helping him keep his range for his potent striking game.
With the win, a date with UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping awaits. Bisping has not fought since last October against Dan Henderson, where he edged Hendo in a decision victory. Bisping draws a lot of ire from his division and fans for his lack of activity during his reign, but his fight with Whittaker should change the opinion of him for many fans. It will be a fight very similar to this weekend’s Whittaker/Romero clash, meaning there will be a lot of striking and not a lot of groundwork from either man. Those fights make fans gain a lot of respect and can maybe even start to begin a bigger fanbase for “The Count”.
When these two fight, it will be a very fun fight to watch. While Bisping likes to trash talk, Whittaker is as humble as it gets. And with two polar opposites, this fight can appeal to a wide spectrum of fans.
