Rivera Returns But Hurricanes Fall to Longhorns 52-28

BROOKLYN, Ohio – The Ladies of Lutheran West invaded Brooklyn tonight in Varsity Action.  Despite a hard fought effort, the Hurricanes came up short in defeat by a score of 52-28.

The Longhorns used a fast paced attack in the first quarter to jump out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back from there.  They also dominated the boards underneath and try as they might, the Hurricanes just couldn’t grab enough boards as Lutheran West got far too many second chance points.

The Longhorns also used great ball movement, and all five starters scored in the first quarter in which they led 19-5 after completion.  The Hurricanes continued to fight tough but couldn’t make it any closer and trailed 32-10 at the half.

The Lady Canes made some key second half adjustments and scored the first five points of the third quarter before the Longhorns once again caught stride and ran away with it, eventually winning 52-28.

The Hurricanes did have a couple of bright spots however, one was Jelly Benz scoring 10 points to lead the team.  Another bright spot was the returning Daniele Rivera who missed the first nine games of the season due to injury.  She played great on defense and forced the Longhorns to send her to the line 5 different times for a total of 10 attempts in which she drained 5 of.

I spoke to Rivera after the game about her return to the court, her outlook on the game and the rest of the season, “I love being on the court with my teammates regardless of the score.  I love the energy that we bring and the energy of the game of basketball.  I felt really good being back on the court with my team.  I think we need to come together as a team, as in any sport, you have to come together as a team to be successful.”

I was truly impressed by the attitude of Rivera on and off the court.  Despite her injury, she worked hard to return to the court, and kept the team in the game mentally and spiritually tonight despite the lopsided score.

Brooklyn will now have a week off before hosting Fairview next Wednesday night in conference action.

Lutheran West will return home to host Lutheran East Friday night.

The JV team also lost, 46-30.
