Isaiah Thomas is getting closer to suiting up for the Cavaliers, but first the team is hoping he will suit up with the Canton Charge, according to a new report.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the team is trying to find a way for Thomas to scrimmage with the G-League affiliate. It’s unclear if Thomas would travel to Canton or if Charge players would come up to the Cavs practice facility to make that happen.
Even before that occurs, however, Thomas will get his first full court five-on-five experience since he became a Cavalier. According the report, the Cavs currently have back-to-back practices scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
The initial timeline for the return of Thomas that the team gave to the media in the fall was January. A report from The Vertical a few days ago said Thomas was targeting the first week of the month for his return.
According to ESPN, “the final determination for when Thomas would play would be a joint decision agreed upon by Thomas, the Cavs’ front office and the team’s medical staff.”
Thomas has not played since the 2016-17 Eastern Conference Finals due to a torn labrum in his hip. Last season for the Boston Celtics, Thomas averaged 28.9 points, 5.9 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game.
