CLEVELAND– Cavaliers fans may have to wait past Oct. 17 to see Isaiah Thomas out on the court.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Thomas hasn’t started to run yet due to the hip injury he suffered in the 2017 NBA Playoffs that caused him to miss the final three games of the Eastern Conference Finals. Wojnarowski also said that Thomas’ physical will take place “soon” in Cleveland.
“Around Isaiah, there is an expectation that he may not be ready to start the season, they’re going to take this slowly,” Wojnarowski said. “This is a contract year for him, they’re going to make sure he’s fully healed before he returns.”
The Cavs acquired Thomas on Tuesday in a trade with the Celtics that sent Kyrie Irving to Boston, and also brought Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Brooklyn Nets 2018 unprotected first-round pick to Cleveland.
There is speculation that Celtics general manager Danny Ainge was willing to part ways with his dynamic point guard for Irving because of Thomas’ hip injury. When asked by the media if the injury played a role in the trade, Ainge said, “some.”
“There’s gonna be probably a little bit of a delay for Isaiah as he starts the season this year, but I think that Isaiah should be fine and healthy as the season goes along,” he continued.
