According to Marc Stein and Brian Windhorst of ESPN, Cavaliers Guard Iman Shumpert has been discussed in trade talks.
As the NBA Trade Deadline of 3 PM Thursday approaches, the whirlwind of trade rumors will probably only spin crazier, but this is not all too shocking considering General Manager David Griffin has said no player is “untouchable.”
Shumpert is in the first-year of a four-year contract worth $40 million and is having one of his worst statistical seasons of his career.
He is still praised for his versatility and defense, but the 25-year-old is shooting just 38 percent from the field and 32 percent from three-point range, averaging a career-low 6.2 points per game.
If the Cavs were to trade Shumpert, it wouldn’t necessarily mean that the front office and coaching staff don’t view him as a good player, but the organization does not have many assets to work with in terms of trade-pieces, and Shumpert might be one piece they feel they could use to get better as a whole.
A straight up trade involving, for example, Timofey Mozgov for Kyle Korver might not be appealing, but throw Shumpert in the mix and then a team might start listening.
Just using Korver as an example.
If there is one thing that the latest Cavs’ rumors around the trade deadline indicate, it’s that the front office does not believe the roster as constructed is in the best place it can be to win a championship.
And when a team in the Bay Area is off to the best start to a season in NBA history, it’s hard to argue that the Cavs are exactly where they want to be at this point of the season.
