The Ravens defense is going to get their first look at Browns rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield Sunday when they come to First Energy Stadium, and from the sounds of it the unit is very impressed with the footage they have seen from the young thrower thus far.
Today Ravens defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale had nothing but high praise for Mayfield when talking about this Sunday’s matchup in Cleveland.
“I already told the defense this, I think Baker Mayfield is this generation’s Brett Favre or John Elway, if you will,” Martindale said Thursday via ESPN.
“This guy knows where he wants to go with the ball, and he’s very accurate. He’s got a quick release, and he’s really playing well.”
Now of course it remains to be seen if Martindale really thinks that way, as only time will tell, or if he’s just trying to give Mayfield a big head as they head into Sunday’s game.
“The kid’s confidence and swag,” Martindale said. “When he comes out there, he thinks he’s standing on top of the mountain. He’s making plays to show he’s standing on top of the mountain.”
No matter, after what the Ravens defense has done already this season, and did last week against Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger, Mayfield should be on high alert for tricks from the Ravens D on Sunday in their first matchup.
