CLEVELAND, Ohio — Rashad Williams (Detroit, Mich./Wayne Memorial), one of the top guards in the State of Michigan, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Cleveland State and play basketball beginning with the 2018-19 academic year.
“We are very excited about Rashad joining the Viking Basketball family,” CSU head coach Dennis Felton said. “He’s exactly what we want in a guard at Cleveland State. Rashad is very dynamic and possesses the skill set to do all the things we want to see in a complete guard.
“Rashad shoots well from deep, he can score off the bounce and he’s a good passer and creator for others. Rashad also brings a determined work ethic which will fit well into the culture we are building here. With the leadership and support from his CSU teammates, Rashad will make quite an impact on our program.”
The 6-foot-3 point guard averaged 24.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 6.7 assists at Wayne Memorial HS last year, playing for head coach Nkwane Young. He led the team to its first KLAA championship, establishing himself as one of the state’s most prolific scorers. The elite sharpshooter knocked down 78 three-pointers last year, leading the team to a 19-4 record.
Selected to the Kensington Conference All-Conference Team last year, Williams was also honored on the Class A Detroit News boys basketball All State First Team.
In addition, Williams was the first player from Wayne Memorial to earn Associated Press first team all-state honors in 20 years after leading the team to the district finals where he scored 29 points, including a 7-of-11 effort from behind the arc.
Cleveland State opens the 2017-18 season on Saturday (Nov. 11) with a 7:00 pm game at Akron as part of the NE Ohio Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Following a Nov. 14 game at Rutgers, the Vikings will host Coppin State for the home opener on Nov. 17 at 7:00 pm in the Wolstein Center.
