Ranking the Browns Needs by Position

9. Quarterback

I have QB ninth on my need list. Yes ninth. This is really a question of what do the Browns need now to help them improve versus long-term. If it’s long-term, yes the Browns will draft a franchise QB if they deem one is there but as of now the team could suffice next year without one if they want to improve on more pressing needs. As a team the Browns completed 60.9% of their passes for 4156 yards and 20 TDs to 12 INTs. Those are pretty good numbers for a team that got battered from the offensive line and had nobody to throw to. Johnny Manziel is likely done in Cleveland but the team still has Josh McCown, Austin Davis, and easily forgotten Connor Shaw coming back next year. There are plenty of NFL QBs set to hit free agency so the Browns will have plenty of options of what they want to do.

8. Center

Alex Mack is likely to opt out of his current contract with the Browns. If that happens, Cameron Erving would be the guy to move to center to replace him. Erving needs to work hard in the off-season. His technique was terrible and he was easily beaten by spin and other pass-rushing moves. His strength is also lacking and watching field goals he would often be pushed back leading to some of the blocks. I have no confidence in him as of right now taking over at center next year. The Browns need to add somebody to make sure he doesn’t start or be ready to start because Erving should be on a short leash.

7. Tight End

It was a good job by the Browns resigning Gary Barnidge. Unfortunately for him, he has nobody else around him to take the focus off of him. This season, Gary had 79 catches for 1043 yards and 9 TDs. All of the other Browns TEs combined for 8 catches and 74 yards. The Browns need to find somebody else that can go out there and give the QB another target to throw to.
