21. Johnny Manziel, 2014-15 (3 starts, 2 seasons): Manziel is still the backup for the Browns, although he did play in two games, starting one, in relief of regular starter Josh McCown. He is 1-2 as a Browns starter with 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
22. Connor Shaw, 2014-15 (1 start, 2 seasons): Shaw wound up being activated from the practice squad to start last year’s season finale against the Ravens, and played reasonably well. He was rewarded with a three-year contract, but Shaw suffered a season-ending injury early in the preseason and is on injured reserve.
23. Josh McCown, 2015 (5 starts, 1 season): McCown is the Browns’ starting quarterback this year and will be for the foreseeable future. He’s thrown for 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, but has only won one of his starts.
Well, there you have it. Only seven of the ex-Browns starters are still in the NFL, and only one of them – Hoyer – is considered the starting quarterback. The ones who have become starters didn’t hold on to their jobs for very long and most had to spend time as backups before getting that chance to become starters. And, even more ironically, the ones who wind up with the chance to start against the Browns wind up having the worst starts of their post-Browns career, with the exception of Garcia.
So, if the Browns do decide to part ways with Manziel at some point between now and next year’s regular season opener, don’t fret. History says he will fall flat on his face wherever he ends up – if he ends up anywhere at all.
Until next time, remember that Cleveland Rocks!
