PREVIEW: Cavs take on Portland for Isaiah Thomas’ return

1. The IT guy

Four months after acquiring him in the Kyrie Irving trade, Cavs point guard Isaiah Thomas will make his debut in Wine & Gold on Tuesday night.

There are some stipulations to his return, however. He will be on an undisclosed minutes restriction, he will come off the bench, and he will be unable to play in back-to-back games for the time being, meaning Wednesday night’s game in Boston is out.

Thomas has not played since the 2016-17 Eastern Conference Finals as a member of the Celtics, where he averaged 28.9 points, 5.9 assists and 2.7 rebounds. Yesterday when the announcement was made, Thomas acknowledged that he still needs to find his rhythm.

“I mean my hip is better, but I have no rhythm, I have no feel for the game right now,” Thomas said. “With the games coming, it’s going to give me opportunity to get my rhythm back, get my feel back, and it might take some time. But at the same time the progress that I’ve made is all good and positive progress and I’m excited about the opportunity to be able to get out there and compete.”

Thomas is likely to the point where the only way to acquire that rhythm is to simply get out there and play. Tuesday night will provide him the chance to do just that.
