2. Containing Drummond
Tristan Thompson and Kevin Love are both out. Needless to say, the Cavs will be short-staffed when it comes to containing Andre Drummond. Drummond is the league’s leading rebounder, averaging 15.8 per game, and last game against the Cavs he put up 21 points and 22 rebounds.
The biggest key to stopping him will be Larry Nance Jr., and he will need to stay out of foul trouble if the Cavs stand a chance on the inside.
“He plays so aggressive and with that intensity, but he’s just got to stay away from the silly fouls,” Lue said of Nance. “Some fouls just happen when he’s protecting the rim. He’s a big, so it’s going to happen, but we’ve just got to try and stay away from silly fouls and we’ve just got to protect him as much as possible. We can’t let him get in foul trouble, we can’t let the starting bigs try and take advantage of him on the block either. We’ve got to be ready to protect him and make sure we can try and keep him out of foul trouble.”
Lue said rookie Ante Zizic will also see time on Drummond, and the LeBron James definitely won’t see time on the Detroit big man.
“I can’t run him down in the ground,” Lue said. “If we’ve got to put Calderon on Drummond, we’ll do that before I put ‘Bron on him. We already ask him to do a lot, so we can’t ask him to run down there and bang with big Drummond.”
