1. Calderon Runs The Point- Starting Cavaliers point guard George Hill is out for Sunday’s game after suffering a sprained left ankle in Friday’s game against New Orleans, so it’s safe to say fans in attendance will see a lot of Jose Calderon running the point. And that’s a very good thing for Cleveland.
At the beginning of the season, fans questioned why the Cavs signed Calderon and wondered what use he would be. That’s because Cleveland had Isaiah Thomas and Derrick Rose also at the one-guard to start the campaign and it was assumed Calderon was going to take up a spot that the team could’ve used on a big man or another wing player. Well, life has a funny way of working itself out and no one would’ve guessed that the veteran would be the last point guard standing from the original roster.
The Cavs have had a ton of success when Calderon starts games and even if he doesn’t accompany the starting unit, him receiving minutes is crucial to the team’s success. It’s not because he’ll go off for twenty points or provides lockdown defense but rather because he doesn’t make foolish plays and runs the offense correctly. Defensively, he’s not a liability and usually embraces the challenge of defending the opposing point guard, no matter who it is. He’s a perfect point guard to run alongside LeBron James and The King has praised Calderon in the past about his wise playmaking.
The more Jose Calderon, the better for Cleveland.
