1. Calderon Coming Up Big- The numbers do not lie, even when most hope they would just once. That statement isn’t any truer than when it comes to the minutes of Jose Calderon.
Calderon, the backup point guard to Hill, started 32 games for Cleveland during the regular season and was essential to victories. Not because he’s a scoring machine, defensive nightmare or passing wizard. No, it’s because he always makes the right play.
In Calderon-started games, the Cavs have benefitted off of smart offensive basketball by way of Calderon manning the point. While he usually doesn’t cap off possessions with the ball in his hand, the veteran surely leaves his stamp on the game. As the season progressed, his three-ball efficiency even went up. That’s something Cleveland is missing sorely right now.
Defense might be a concern for some fans when it comes to Calderon receiving big minutes in a playoff game but rest assured, that isn’t as big an issue as made out to be. Calderon can simply be employed to blitz Victor Oladipo on the defensive end. Since this was the plan going into the series anyway, it wouldn’t throw anything off to use Calderon in that position.
23-9. That’s the Cavs record when Calderon starts. One has to be feeling pretty good about those odds, even with the lackluster play of the Spanish-born guard to this point.
