1. LeBron James and the march to 30,000
LeBron James is just 41 points away from becoming the youngest player in NBA history to score 30,000 points. Kobe Bryant currently holds that distinction as he was 34-years and 109-days old when he did it. James just turned 33 a few weeks ago on Dec. 30.
The last time these two faced off (in the most recent Cavs’ win), he threw down 32 points. But if it’s up to James he would rather hit the milestone in Saturday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder for one simple reason.
“Hopefully I don’t do it tonight because my kids got school tomorrow,” he said. “Hopefully I’ll wait til Saturday. They come to the weekend games. So, that would be pretty cool.”
But the enormity of the milestone is not lost on James. Only six players before him have accomplished the feat: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387 points), Karl Malone (36,928), Bryant (33,643), Michael Jordan (32,292), Wilt Chamberlain (31,419) and Dirk Nowitzki (30,808).
“I definitely looked at the list and saw the list and seen of all the guys that have played in this league and the number of guys that have played in this league, it’s definitely a select few,” James said. “It’s a select company. So in that right, it’s special in that right. But I can honestly sit here and say that I’ve never set out to set scoring records or be a part of a scoring club.”
“I’m joining elite company,” he continued. “When I walk into the (30,000) point club they’re going to look at me like, ‘What are you doing here?’ I ain’t supposed to be there.”
