The Cavaliers are less than two weeks away from the season opener against Chicago. Head Coach David Blatt will have to reduce his preseason roster down to 12 active players by October 26th.
All but a few spots on the roster appear to be virtual locks. If Tristan Thompson does not sign with the Cavaliers in time for the season opener, it could offer one more spot than was anticipated heading into this off season. Let’s break down what the roster is going to look like and take a look at the players “on the bubble”, fighting for a final roster spot.
We’ll start with the locks.
Guards
PG Mo Williams – Williams will open the season as starting point guard until Kyrie Irving returns from injury.Williams will move to backup point guard after Irving is back, and can play some shooting guard, so don’t be surprised to see Williams on the floor with Dellavedova or Irving at the same time.
SG J.R. Smith – Smith will likely open the season as starting shooting guard until Iman Shumpert is healthy. When Shumpert returns, Smith will primarily be used as a sixth-man to provide scoring off the bench, a role he has flourished in throughout his career.
PG Matthew Dellavedova – Dellavedova will begin the season as the backup point guard to Williams. He should see a significant amount of minutes to start the year, but when all three point guards on the team are healthy, he may be used for his defensive abilities to shut down opposing guards.
