St. Edward’s (9-2) returned to action after a great showing in the storied Torrey Pines Holiday Classic. While in California, St. Ed’s went (2-2) with a fourth place finish in the National Division.
Considered the class of the 4 Division Holiday Classic St. Ed’s came back home to face battled-tested St. Vincent-St. Mary (2-6). St. Vincent-St. Mary had a tough schedule over the holiday break with the overtime lose to nationally ranked Garfield Heights (85-76) and a close two-point lose to St. Ignatius (61-59).
In the first half, the game was a back and forth battle between both teams. Thanks to the leadership of senior guard Scott Walter STVM was able to control the pace with his ball handling and the spark from freshman Malaki Branham with his first varsity start. Branham had 9 points to lead STVM in the first half.
In the second half, St. Ed’s increased the pace on the offensive end and by trapping and pressing to force the ball out of Walters hands. The eagles were lead by sophomores Grant Huffman and Montorie Foster. Huffman was back from injury that has limited him most of the season. The leading scorer on the night was Foster with 13 points. He contributed with 6 points in the first half and 7 points in the second half.
Foster pushed the pace with smart drives to the basket for layups and drawing fouls going 5-for-7 from the free throw line.
Final Score: St. Ed’s 62 – STVM 55
