In only his second game as a Shoreman, defenseman Connor Koncelik showed his offensive skills by netting a hat-trick and leading the Shoremen to a 5-4 upset win over Solon High School in the first round of the Rocky River Tournament.
Koncelik scored in each period, including the game winning goal with just 1:31 left in the game. The game was tight checking from start to finish and saw Avon Lake battle back from a 2-0 deficit.
All 20 players contributed on the night, including four freshmen, One of those freshmen Luke Farthing got the Shoremen on the board in the first period with his first high school goal. After Koncelik scored two consecutive goals, senior co-captains Jared Aslaksen and Patrick Graney combined when Graney feathered a great lead pass to Aslaksen who finished with a nice deke to beat the Solon goalie. Graney and Hunter Hall assisted on the Koncelik goals.
Avon Lake got in some penalty trouble in the third period and were two men short for over one minute. The penalty killing unit of Graney, Edgars York and Brian Walasinski stood tall and helped goalie Dillon Aslaksen stifle the Comets. Avon Lake outshot Solon 40-33 for the game, with Aslaksen turning aside 29 shots for the victory.
Avon Lake is right back in tourney action when they play twice on Saturday (7:00am and 9:00pm) at Rocky River’s Hamilton Rink.
